4. Reciprocity

For instance, a software company may provide a free trial version of its product. By doing so, they give potential customers a taste of what they’re missing. Once users experience the value of the product, they may feel inclined to subscribe or make a purchase, essentially repaying the favor.


5. Anchoring


Anchoring is a cognitive bias that involves relying too heavily on the first piece of information encountered when making decisions. In advertising, anchoring can be effectively utilized through pricing strategies. 


For example, consider a retailer marketing a product priced at $499, but displaying a high original price of $799. By highlighting the substantial “savings,” consumers feel a pressure to act quickly on the seemingly favorable deal. This technique works by setting expectations and guiding perceptions of value.


6. Cognitive Dissonance


Cognitive dissonance occurs when a consumer experiences discomfort due to conflicting beliefs or attitudes. Advertisers can exploit this phenomenon post-purchase through follow-up marketing. For instance, once a customer buys a product, brands often send confirmation emails with reassurances about being part of an elite group or highlighting the benefits of their purchase. 


These actions help reduce any lingering doubts and affirm the customer’s decision, leading to improved customer satisfaction and potentially fostering brand loyalty.
